Chapter 50

Rush

I grab her arm when she tries to dart past me.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Mr. Hartford—”

“Fuck Hartford.” I set off down the hallway, dragging her along with me.

I’ve only taken a few steps when her bag hits me square in the chest. “No, Rush. I’m going to class. Let go of me or I really will scream.”

“Will you?” I consider calling her bluff for half a second, but the look in her eyes tells me she’s not joking. “Fuck you, then. Get lost.” I drop my hand, and stalk off without looking back.

With everyone in class, the hallway is empty and I make it all the way to one of the side doors without being stopped. Pushing it open, I step outside and walk over to the football field. The bleachers are empty and silent. I duck my head and go beneath them, walking far enough that I won’t be spotted by anyone walking past.

Lowering myself to the ground, I lean my back against one of the supports and pull out the flask I have tucked inside my hoodie. A twist of the cap and I lift it to my lips and take a long swallow. The burn as the vodka slides down my throat is satisfying, and I tip my head back and close my eyes.

The jumbled mess of thoughts inside my head unravels with every mouthful of vodka, until I’m partially dozing, floating in a blissful numb haze. No thoughts, no feelings, just blessed silence.

Voices reach me, growing louder as they move toward the bleachers. It must be lunch time, which means my friends will be looking for me. I’m not sure if I want to deal with people right now. I’m happy on my own, without the reminder that they have at least one parent in their lives, and a place on the hockey team.

I lift the flask to my lips, and nothing comes out.

“Fuck.”

I don’t want to sober up, but without anything to drink that’ll happen before the day is over.

The voices are above my head now—laughing, light, female, and recognizable. And just like that the numbness I’d been wrapped in disintegrates, and anger takes it place. I push to my feet, and walk out from beneath the bleachers, then turn to look up at the seats. Red hair glints under the sun as Bailey leans toward the darker haired girl beside her. Nicky’s face is turned toward me, and she’s laughing at whatever Bailey is saying. When she sees me, she smiles and waves.

“Hi, Rush!”

Bailey’s shoulders stiffen and her spine snaps straight, but she doesn’t turn. I climb over the seats until I’m on the row directly in front of them.

“Didn’t see you in class this morning,” Nicky continues, oblivious to her friend’s discomfort. “Dom said you were running late.”

I shrug. “Took the morning off. But don’t worry, I’ll be there this afternoon.”

“There’s a rumor going around that Bailey’s brother has taken your spot on the team. Is that true?”

I fake a smile, while I bore a hole in the side of Bailey’s head, willing her to look at me.
